CEED Commmon Entrance Exam for Design



Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) 2011 is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD), Department of Education (DAE), Government of India.



CEED 2011 is the qualifying examination for admission to Post Graduate M.Des. (i.e. Master of Design) programmes at the Industrial Design Centre (IIT Bombay), Inter disciplinary Industrial Design Programme (IIT Delhi), Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (IISc Bangalore), Department of Design (IIT Guwahati) and Design Programme (IIT Kanpur) and Ph.D. Programmes in Design in some of these Institutes. However, IIT Kanpur and IISc Bangalore also consider GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score for admission into design programmes. The examination tests the candidates for visual perception ability, drawing skills, design aptitude and communication skills.



Note: CEED 2011 / GATE 2011 qualification alone does not guarantee admission to design programmes offered at IITs or IISc Bangalore. Candidates also have to fulfill other requirements such as tests & interviews of the respective institutions (i.e. IIT or IISc Bangalore) for admission.

CEED 2011 Exam Pattern



CEED 2011 tests an individual’s drawing skills, aesthetic sensibility, creativity, problem identification and approach to visual and mechanical design. The examination also tests visualization, creativity, design and general awareness, and comprehension.

The candidates will be required to appear in a single examination of three hours duration without any break.

The question paper will be in English. No specific text book or guide book preparations are necessary to appear in CEED. Candidates may however polish up their drawing, rendering and visualization skills.

CEED 2011 Education Qualification



Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design / Interior Design, or equivalent

Professional Diploma of NID / Professional Diploma of CEPT (5 year program) or equivalent

B.F.A. (4 year professional programme, after 10+2)

G.D. Art (5 year programme, after 10th) followed by one year professional experience

Master's degree in Arts / Science / Computer Applications



Note: All Degree/Diploma/Professional courses must satisfy 10+2+4 pattern or more.

CEED 2011 Programs



Common Entrance Examination for Design - CEED 2011 is conducted for admission to postgraduate Masters and PhD programs in Design offered by the following institutes.



Master of Design Programs



IISc Bangalore: M.Des. in Product Design and Engineering*

IIT Bombay: M.Des. in (i) Industrial Design, (ii) Visual Communication, (iii) Animation, (iv) Interaction Design

IIT Delhi: M.Des. in Industrial Design

IIT Guwahati: M.Des

IIT Kanpur: M.Des. in Industrial Design*



(*GATE qualified candidates will also be considered for admission to these programmes).



Ph.D Programs



Ph.D Programmes in Design are offered in some of the above institutes



Common for All:



Candidates must either have completed or be expecting to complete any of the following, by July 2009:



(i) Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design/ Interior Design, or equivalent



(ii) Professional Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT, or equivalent)



(iii) B.F.A. (4 year professional programme, after 10+2)



(iv) G.D. Art (5 year programme after 10th) with one year professional experience



(v) Master’s degree in Arts / Science / Computer Applications



Before applying for CEED, candidates must assure themselves that they are eligible to seek admission to the specific programme they are interested in.



There is no age limit and a candidate can appear in CEED any number of times.



Following given institute wise eligibility criteria along with courses offered on the basis of CEED 2011.



A) For IISc. – Bangalore – M.Des:



Eligibility for applying to M.Des. programme is a degree in engineering / design / architecture. Selection for admission is based on performance in a design aptitude test (DAT) and interview to be conducted at the Centre towards the end of April /early May. Short-listing for DAT is done on the basis of applicants’ CEED or GATE score.



Candidates who are awaiting their CEED/GATE score can apply by quoting their CEED/GATE registration number. Institute will get their scores from the CEED/GATE office.



B) For IIT – Bombay



The candidates should have a minimum of 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ ST) or equivalent grades in the qualifying examination (as listed below). Candidates with 45% or higher marks with relevant experience of 2 years and exceptionally outstanding portfolio may also be considered.



Industrial Design:

i. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design/ Interior Design, or equivalent



ii. Professional Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT, or equivalent)



Visual Communication, Animation and Interaction Design:



i. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design/Interior Design, or equivalent



ii. Professional Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT, or equivalent)



iii. B.F.A. (4 year professional programme, after 10+2)



iv. G.D. Art (5 year programme after 10th) with one year professional experience



v. Master’s degree in Arts / Science / Computer Applications



C) For IIT – Delhi



Applicants for the M.Des. Industrial Design Programme at IIT Delhi must have minimum CGPA of 6.75 on a 10 point scale or 60% marks in aggregate for General Category. For the reserved category, this is relaxed by 5%.



Candidates should confirm their eligibility and CEED score requirements from prospectus available at the IIT Delhi website. Full-time sponsored candidates are also advised to clear the CEED Test which is essentially an aptitude test. There is also reservation of seats for OBC Candidates. D) IIT – Guwahati – M.Des:



a. 4-year Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in Design, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design or a Design related field. OR



4 year Professional Diploma in Design of NID or Professional Diploma of CEPT (5-year program)



b. A minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades (50% marks in case of SC/ST candidates) in the qualifying degree/diploma.



E) IIT – Kanpur



Candidates having a bachelor’s degree in engineering/design/architecture/ fine arts and a valid CEED/GATE score are eligible to apply for the Master of Design programme. CEED/GATE score is used for short listing the applicants. The short listed applicants will be called for a written test and interview to test their creativity and inclination for innovation.



Admissions will be offered on the basis of this test and interview.
